JINGLE: The secret weapon that is forgotten

Jakub Vlášek

There are many tools we can fight with in the field of digital marketing. Every brand should define itself using specific elements that are characteristic of it and help shape its identity. These can include a logo, fonts, colors, etc. A jingle also belongs among them, even though it is often forgotten.

A jingle, or advertising tune, is a short, catchy melody often used on the radio, television, or even the internet. The ideal jingle is resonant, rhythmic, and easy to remember, so that a potential customer recalls the brand or product every time they hear it.

So, what are the traits of a guaranteed successful jingle?

An unforgettable and catchy melody is always a safe bet. If it is optimistic and energetic, the audience will definitely appreciate it. Instrumentation or the choice of musical instruments highlights the uniqueness of the jingle. Complex musical motifs are not always necessary. A few tones with a characteristic character, complemented by sound effects, are enough.

If a simple and memorable text or slogan is attached to the jingle, it highlights the main message or positioning of the brand. A absolutely perfect example is the McDonald's brand jingle with the text:  I’m lovin‘ itThe effective integration of the brand name, logo, or other elements into the text can work just as well. A clear and compelling call to action (CTA) that directly encourages the audience to take a certain action, such as making a purchase or visiting a website, can also be powerful.

The overall tone of the jingle should match the brand's image and target audience. The tone can be positive, fun, emotional, or humorous. Betting on sad tunes is, by the very nature of things, a rather unfortunate choice. True, it would probably be original, but a brand cannot afford associations with negative emotions. Jingles have been a staple of advertising across media for decades, which currently leads to a strong sense of nostalgia. Many consumers like to remember jingles from their childhood. “Striking the right chord” can lead to a strong emotional connection between the listener and the brand. Nostalgia can be used to compose jingles that evoke a sense of familiarity and comfort, and thus a positive association with the brand.

Regarding the length of a jingle, there is no prescribed norm or exact recipe for success. The purpose is brevity and memorability. Some musical motifs require only a few seconds to create the desired emotion, others up to a minute. The length mostly depends on the planned practical use of the jingle. Imagine if the Netflix jingle was, say, 16 seconds long and repeated before every episode on the streaming platform. At the very least, it might feel a bit annoying after 20 episodes.

Therefore, the jingle must adapt to the given marketing channel. If it is planned to be used elsewhere as well, it must have the ability to adapt. Indeed, Netflix had a special version of its jingle composed for films shown in cinemas. The author of this very pompous orchestral variation is Hans Zimmer, and the jingle is 16 seconds long.

The Jingle as a Winner

So in what ways do jingles actually have the upper hand over other brand elements? Surely it has happened to you many times that a song got stuck in your head, which you recalled on various occasions. With jingles, this is exactly the goal, and because they are short and distinctive, it is much easier to recall them in connection with the brand.

One of the main goals of advertising is to create a lasting impression on the consumer. Jingles are an incredibly effective way to achieve this goal, thanks to their innate memorability. They use repetition, rhyme, and melody to create a catchy tune that is hard to forget. A well-crafted jingle can be recalled by the listener long after the ad has ended.

Another plus is their uniqueness. By differing in execution from other brand elements, which are mostly visual, they can set a brand apart from the competition even in a truly crowded market. Of course, it's not always possible to use them. You will hardly play a three-second jingle continuously 24/7 from a billboard in the middle of the city. However, they can be said to be otherwise very universal, as you can use them extensively across all possible digital channels.

And what is the best thing about them? Unlike a logo, which has a clearly defined mood board, fonts, and other essentials, a jingle can change and adapt as needed to different marketing campaigns, providing flexibility and cost-effectiveness in brand communication. A good example is the jingle of the Hyundai brand. The melody remains, but the execution changes. Thus, the jingle has a fresh vibe with each campaign while maintaining consistency.

Jingles remain a powerful tool in marketing thanks to their ability to create emotional connections, enhance memorability, support brand identity, adapt to different platforms, and evoke nostalgia. Still, it is important to weigh both the benefits and potential disadvantages of jingles when planning advertising campaigns. A well-designed and strategically used jingle can have a significant impact on brand awareness and success.
